Yiddish: Past, Present, and Future Tales from the Yiddish Book
Center

Zvi Jankelowitz
Admission $20
March 12, 2023 3pm
Zvi Jankelowitz, whose four grandparents were native Yiddish speakers and immigrants to South Africa, will take the audience on a journey which began in his hometown of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Zvi will show how Yiddish has emerged from the time in the early 80’s when Aaron Lansky established the Yiddish Book Center to rescue and preserve Yiddish literature. He will take us to the present where the Center is at the forefront of technology advances, ensuring the accessibility of Yiddish books through digitization to Yiddish speakers, and through translations into English for non-Yiddish speakers . He will share clips from the Wexler Oral History Project, a growing collection of more than 1,000 vide interviews about Yiddish language and culture. Zvi will also give us a glimpse of what the future of Yiddish looks like for the 21st Century.
